Creativity & Lessons
Hey, everyone!
I know it’s been a while since I last wrote here (who would have thought that finding the time to write in this all-consuming life wouldn’t be as easy as one might think?), but I’m officially back! Not that I’ve been away—I’ve always been here—but now I’m back with more ideas and a new series that I plan to share with you over the coming weeks.
This year, I’ve been reading a few different books (I don’t know about you, but I have the quirky habit of reading at least two or three books simultaneously, each on a different subject). One of the books I’m almost halfway through is called "Creativity, Inc. (The Expanded Edition): Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration." I know this is a familiar favorite for many, but if this is your first time hearing about it, the book is by Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios, and Amy Wallace.
The book delves into the principles and practices that have fostered a culture of creativity and innovation at Pixar. It emphasizes the importance of creating an environment where original ideas can flourish, addressing challenges like fear of failure, resistance to change, and the hidden barriers that hinder creative growth. The expanded edition, which is the copy I have, includes additional insights on leadership and creativity from Ed Catmull’s experiences at Pixar and Disney. In the author's own words, it's a compilation of “an expression of the ideas that I believe make the best in us possible.”
As someone who runs an apparel brand and needs to be consistently creative, I’m finding this book incredibly valuable. I think anyone can benefit from it, whether you’re a creator, writer, founder, or artist. The lessons in this book can be applied to so many different areas of your life, especially if you’re looking to foster a culture of collaboration and creativity within your organization.
While reading, I found myself highlighting so many passages (as I usually do when I read) that I felt compelled to share them with you and discuss what I love about them and what each passage can teach us.
For this series, each article will cover a different quote. I’ll discuss what I love about it and what I think we can learn from it. You get the idea! And if you’re reading this book and would like to share the lessons you've learned, please send us a message on IG! As always, I love hearing back from our community.
Thanks for the love, and I hope these quotes resonate with you as much as they did with me.
